I would like to express my support for EPA's approval of North Carolina's request to eliminate vehicle emissions testing requirements in Forsyth County and the other affected counties. As a North Carolina resident, I believe this change is overdue. Vehicle technology has advanced significantly over the past several decades. Most modern vehicles are equipped with sophisticated onboard diagnostic systems that continuously monitor emissions-related components and alert drivers when repairs are needed. Because of these advancements, mandatory annual emissions testing no longer provides the same benefit it once did. For many residents, emissions testing represents an additional cost, inconvenience, and use of time without a clear environmental benefit. Citizens are already responsible for maintaining their vehicles, and manufacturers have invested heavily in cleaner engines and emissions control systems. If air quality standards are being met and can continue to be maintained without this program, it makes sense to remove unnecessary requirements. Eliminating emissions testing will save drivers money, reduce administrative burdens, and streamline the inspection process while allowing regulatory resources to be focused where they are most needed. I support decisions that are based on current data, scientific evidence, and demonstrated results rather than continuing programs simply because they have existed for many years. I respectfully urge EPA to approve North Carolina's request and finalize the removal of vehicle emissions testing requirements in Forsyth County and the other affected counties.
