I urge EPA to deny the proposed registration allowing over-the-top spraying of Topramezone on genetically engineered cotton. Topramezone is linked to thyroid issues, liver damage, and pancreatic degeneration. It is also highly mobile in soil, potentially harming important soil-dwelling organisms like earthworms, and has a high risk of leaching into groundwater and harming aquatic ecosystems. The EU has indicated a high potential for groundwater exposure above the parametric drinking water limit, which raises concerns about long-term exposure through drinking water. Approving this proposal would increase herbicide use while undermining the principles EPA claims to support. EPA must reject this proposal and encourage agricultural practices that reduce the need for hazardous pesticides and herbicides instead of practices that support only the bottom line of chemical companies.
