Herbicide-resistant weeds continue to plague agriculture, and new tools are needed to slow down their evolution. I have evaluated isoxaflutole for use in cotton over the last 8 years and find it to provide effective residual control of Palmer amaranth and common ragweed. This is especially important given that we have confirmed glyphosate-, ALS-, PPO-, atrazine, glufosinate-, and 2,4-D-resistant Palmer amaranth and glyphosate-, ALS-, and PPO-resistant common ragweed in North Carolina. Isoxaflutole also has some residual activity on annual grasses; our current residual grass control options in cotton are limited to two herbicide modes of action .Furthermore, Axant Flex cotton tolerance to isoxaflutole is excellent whereas most of our other preemergence herbicides labeled for cotton can sometimes injure cotton. For these reasons, I fully support the registration of isoxaflutole for use in Axant Flex cotton.
