Summary: A former Fulbright grant recipient and educator opposes the rescission of the International Education Programs Regulations. They argue that these programs are cost-effective tools for diplomacy, knowledge exchange, and providing valuable career experiences for US students.
I am a former recipient of a Fulbright grant to do research in Peru. Many of my own students have received funding through Fulbright and Fulbright Hayes for a variety of projects. The Fulbright and Fulbright Hayes programs were created by a Republican interested in using US soft power to influence the world. The programs also create deep ties between US and foreign researchers and people more generally. These are not a huge expense for the US government, and they reap enormous amounts of knowledge, good will, and diplomacy, in all directions. They also help US students and researchers gain experience, languages, and good jobs. Please do not end these programs.
