As a registered nurse, I support the Drug Enforcement Administration’s proposed rule to classify diphenidine (DPD) as a Schedule I controlled substance. Diphenidine meets the criteria for a Schedule I controlled substance. It has no accepted medicinal use and has a high potential for abuse. As an NMDA receptor antagonist, it is similar to PCP and has severe adverse effects associated with its use, including tachycardia, confusion, involuntary movements, muscle rigidity, overdose, and death. From a public health perspective, classification in Schedule I may help improve regulatory oversight while still allowing legitimate scientific research through the DEA registration process. With the lack of documented therapeutic uses and the risks associated with its recreational use, I believe the proposed scheduling decision is appropriate. Thank you for considering my comments.
