Summary: An individual with ADHD reports a significant decline in the quality and consistency of Adderall medications, leading to a decrease in their ability to work and maintain their quality of life. They urge the agency to investigate potential issues at the manufacturing level regarding chemical composition and measurement systems.
I was diagnosed with ADHD in 2009, and began taking Adderall shortly thereafter. Before I received an Adderall prescription, I had been fired or almost fired from every job I had ever had. I was terrible at multi-tasking, I could not focus on one thing at a time, I was easily distracted, always felt sleepy throughout the day, had horrible short-term memory, was easily confused, felt spacey/had brain fog and had low to no motivation to start tasks let alone finish them. I also experienced food noise, or constantly being hungry/thinking about food. My life was an absolute mess.
Adderall gave me the focus and motivation I needed just to get through the day. It eliminated my brain fog, exhaustion, inability to multi-task and working memory. I actually excelled at my job and was able to embark on a whole new career as a professional grant writer. I now make 6 figures, whereas before being prescribed Adderall, I struggled to make ends meet at my part-time waitressing job.
For the last couple of years though, I have noticed a severe decline in the quality of the pills. They are also extremely inconsistent from different companies, meaning some manufacturers produce weaker pills than others. Sometimes I take a pill and experience nervousness and eye pressure. Sometimes I take it and feel none of the usual effects, or just weakened effects. It is completely unpredictable from day to day. I believe something is wrong at the manufacturing level. Maybe different chemicals are being used, or maybe the chemical measuring system is inefficient. Something has changed, and my quality of life is suffering. My appetite is back and stronger than ever, it's hard for me to focus, I get easily distracted, and something is just not right. I have even gone off the medication, thinking I had built up a tolerance. Once I went back on it, there was no change. Please look into this issue because my livelihood is at stake.
