I oppose any revision to “BLM 6330: BLM Manual 6330, Management of Wilderness Study Areas” that would weaken protections for wilderness areas, lands with wilderness characteristics, or recommended, proposed, and eligible wilderness areas. I have participated in trail maintenance work on the Pacific Crest Trail in a wilderness area, which required hauling heavy bags of rocks and dirt up a steep, rocky hill because we were not allowed to use wheeled vehicles (wheelbarrows) in the wilderness. Although I certainly didn't enjoy that, I believe if I as an older woman could do that, other people can too. Once we admit roads, motorized use, or logging into these places, the wilderness character is destroyed, and no future Congress can reverse the damage. Our loss is permanent. The BLM has offered no sound justification for reversing decades of settled protections. The proposed change has no documented basis and runs counter to the clear weight of public opinion. Please preserve existing standards without change. Keep America’s wild lands wild.
