As a resident of Polson, Montana, surrounded by the natural beauty of Flathead Lake and the Mission Mountains, I oppose the proposed changes to Bureau of Land Management oil and gas leasing rules. As a life science educator, I understand the importance of healthy ecosystems and the connections between wildlife, habitat, and natural resources. Public lands are essential to our way of life in Montana, supporting wildlife, clean water, recreation, and the natural systems that sustain our communities.
Reducing opportunities for public input and lowering financial requirements for oil and gas companies risks shifting the costs and impacts of development onto taxpayers and future generations. Oil and gas development on public lands should include meaningful public participation, strong protections for wildlife and sensitive habitat, and adequate financial responsibility for cleanup.
I urge the Department of Interior to reject these proposed changes and continue to prioritize responsible stewardship of Montana’s public lands.
