I am very glad that the ATF is thinking of clarifying the rules regarding the transportation of firearms across state lines. I am a former NRA Instructor, and 30 year holder of a Virginia CHP. One of the states adjoining me has very restrictive gun regulations and I could find myself in serious trouble if I merely crossed the state line. In NC I would have to inform a police officer that I was carrying a firearm if stopped for a traffic check. One time in Virginia when involved with an accident I was confronted by a very unprofessional police officer who was there to investigate the accident in which I was the victim. He knew from checking my registration that I was a CHP holder and was trying to provoke me, I suppose. Recent laws passed in Virginia have made storage of handguns in a vehicle very difficult. I can carry the firearm in my vehicle just fine but if I should leave the vehicle, my handgun has to be locked in an opaque container attached to the vehicle or secured with a steel cable and not in "plain sight". A locked trunk is not sufficient. These arbitrary laws and regulations are not for crime prevention but make law abiding citizens unwitting criminals subject to the varying laws of where they happen to be. It is very discouraging to think that my government is working against me. Please make transportation rules for firearms universal in the country. . .
