The United Methodist Church - General Board of Church and SocietyOpposeAdvocacy
Summary: The General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church opposes the proposed rule, arguing that it creates loopholes for criminal actors and straw purchasers. They contend that the rule would make it easier for bad actors to traffic weapons and put communities at risk of gun violence.
As the social justice agency of the United Methodist Church, the General Board of Church and Society, we are writing to OPPOSE the proposed rule RIN 1140-AB01. Unlicensed sellers are not required to conduct background checks or maintain transaction records, creating pathways for criminal actors and straw purchasers. This is not a simplification of existing law, this would exploit loopholes making it far easier for bad actors to purchase and traffic weapons. As people of faith, we are called upon to lead as peacemakers and prophetic witnesses to make our communities safer from gun violence. The United Methodist Church stands for peace and against any policy that puts communities at serious risk.
